Facebook: social networks have a negative impact on democracy

Today it is already difficult to deny the influence of social networks on the minds of people, although a decade ago such a statement would be perceived with a huge share of skepticism. And even the giant and pioneer of social networks, Facebook does not deny that social networks can cause people to change their life priorities. Moreover, in their official blog Facebook representatives recently announced that social networks are a direct threat to democratic freedoms.

This was stated by the Director for Political Affairs Facebook Katie Harbart. She admits that during the presidential election in 2017, Facebook did not react quickly enough to changes in the political situation, which led to the rise of false news and affected the outcome of the election. However, in 2016 Mark Zuckerberg himself did not believe that the social network could influence the outcome of the elections to the United States, and called this idea "extremely insane and impossible." And according to one of the Facebook managers Samid Chakrabarty,

"There is no doubt that social networks affect democracy by influencing people's intentions. And both good and bad intentions. I would like to believe that there is more positive influence, but I can not guarantee this. We would like to "clean up" the social network so that it does not affect the decisions made by people, because any impact is contrary to democratic principles. We, of course, are moving in this direction, but even with all countermeasures taken, this battle will never end. "

Thanks to the recognition of their mistakes, Facebook has already taken a course for change. In mid-January, Mark Zuckerberg announced a change in the algorithm of the news tape. The new system will give preference to posts from real people, and not from the media.
