The Telegram messaging platform, created by Pavel Durov and his team, just finished the second round of the record ICO, and its results did not appeal to the Iranian government. The application - extremely popular in an authoritarian country - has long been trying to anger government officials, especially against the background of how Telegram helps residents organize protests.
As it turned out, the company's ICO, in which Durov managed to attract at least 1.7 billion dollars to develop a full-fledged block-ecosystem, may be the last straw of patience. Some officials of Iran have publicly called for the application to be blocked on the territory of the country, confirming rumors that have been going on for several weeks.
Secretary of the Supreme Government Council for Cyberspace Hassan Firuzabadi warned that the new crypto currency of Telegram could undermine the local economy if it is not stopped.
"Telegram is not the dominant messenger in any country except Iran," Firuzabadi said on state television. "Telegram officially announced that it will be used as an economic platform, and Telegram will undermine Iran's national currency."
"We can not allow the virtual currency Telegram to enter the country," he said, adding that her presence would lead to a leak of $ 50 billion from the country's economy.
Nevertheless, his proposal does not have general support among officials. President Hassan Ruhani opposes such statements. "No one is against the violation of Telegram's monopoly in Iran, but blocking Telegram is not a solution for creating and expanding local messaging applications," he said.
We should also note that Telegram faced a similar response from officials in Russia. To ban is not to solve the problem.
