Laboratory Building 8, working with Facebook, promised to introduce the Portal device, its first development, in the spring at the F8 conference. Information about Portal was kept secret, but the Cheddar site, on own sources at the factory-manufacturer, has opened new details about the device. The gadget is a sort of smart column with video chat function. Developers position it as a competitor to Echo from Amazon and Apple's HomePod.
Unlike the latter, the gadget will not only be able to turn on the radio, search for cool music or talk about the weather. Through integration with the social networking site Facebook, developers will significantly expand its functionality.
Especially for the "column" developed its own version of Android, the device can perceive voice commands, and to display information it will be equipped with a large display. A wide-angle camera will allow users to associate with their Facebook accounts and will be involved in face recognition. In addition, the developers have already concluded a number of contracts with Sony and Universal Music, they say that on the approach of Spotify and Netflix - apparently, the display will be used not only for video chats and animated weather forecasts.
According to information received by Cheddar from the same sources, the price of the device fluctuates around $ 499. Nevertheless, official information, price and features will not be disclosed until May 2018.
