The new development of Alphabet X will connect rural areas of India to the Internet

The Alphabet division under the stamp X developed the technology of Free Space Optical Communications (FSOC), a new type of optics, thanks to which it is possible to connect large rural regions to the Internet.

Now Alphabet signed a contract with the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, within which the state purchased 2,000 FCOS devices. They are small boxes that are attached to poles with mobile Wi-Fi points, and then communicate with each other using light rays, providing an Internet coverage area with a speed of up to 25 Mbps for citizens and up to 100 Mbps for enterprises and organizations.

Now only 20 percent of the inhabitants of the Indian state have access to the Internet, whereas by 2019 local authorities expect to connect to the Network an additional 12 million new users, including not only private individuals, but also enterprises with organizations.

FSOC technology was used by Alphabet engineers and earlier in the Project Loon project - then it was planned to distribute the Internet using special balloons equipped with FCOS devices.

The installation of FSOC on the poles is much cheaper than launching on balloons, the effect is not worse at all, so the Alphabet engineers team will soon arrive in India to implement the project.
