Hundreds of submarine communication cables link each continent of our planet, except Antarctica. They provide uninterrupted transmission of huge amounts of data from servers of popular services and sites to apartment users in different parts of the world. Until recently, the most powerful submarine cable system was considered to be "Appolo", which connects North America and Europe. But soon this may change, because Microsoft and Facebook have created and even launched a completely new generation of underwater communication cable.
For the first time, a new generation of cable, called Marine, was introduced to the general public last year. According to the creators, it is able to provide simultaneous broadcasting of 71 million videos in HD-quality. According to the project, this cable will have to connect American Virginia Beach with the Spanish city of Bilbao. At the moment, all the installation work is completed, and it is fully operational, crossing the Atlantic Ocean at a depth of more than 5000 meters. The length of the cable is 6600 kilometers, and the total weight is more than 4.6 million kilograms.

The cable capacity of the Apollo cable is 3.2 terabit per second. In this respect, Marine does it completely, because it transmits information at a rate of 160 terabits per second. This is about 16 million times faster than the average home Internet connection. The investment of such large companies as Microsoft and Facebook into the creation of a new generation cable is justified, because, according to forecasts, by 2025 the consumption of Internet traffic will grow eight-fold. Microsoft is using Marine to improve the quality of Office 365, Skype and Xbox Live services, while Facebook is interested in developing VR technologies by streamlining relevant content.
