Improving the quality of streaming video in slow networks - a new method

Streaming video is one of the most popular tasks in mobile networks. Users have become demanding on the quality of content, and the slightest stalemate or artifact can spoil all the pleasure of watching a video. Network engineers are constantly working on new ways to maximize video quality, which could help even with the congestion of wireless networks, whose bandwidth is limited. It turns out that for this it is enough to transmit in the first place the most important video packets.

There are already methods that allow you to maintain a certain quality of video and audio when transmitting at a limited rate. We are talking about the protocols of "Quality of Service" Quality of Service (QoS). These methods work fine in many cases, but usually they require bandwidth allocation to provide each user with this resource, which is not always possible in crowded mobile networks.

Peng Hui Tan and Maodong Li with their colleagues at the Institute for Information and Communication Studies of the Singapore Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A * STAR) have developed a different approach to this task, which makes it possible to assess the importance of discrete " video packets ", which reduces the level of bandwidth required to maintain a certain" quality of experience "(QoE). That is, for the user, the video will look more qualitative than with the same bandwidth, but without using a new method.

The researchers developed an effective method for determining the "index of importance" of each video packet. It is based on the bit rate that differs from packet to packet and depends on how much new information is required to be displayed. For example, slow scenes with a small number of movements require a lower bit rate. In this case, scenes in which the action takes place quickly, are characterized by a very high need for bit rates.

The priority of video packets is based on bit rate and other network parameters and allows you to follow these priorities in the QoS scheme in real time. The development team expects that the new approach will provide a significant improvement in the user's perception of the quality of the streaming video. For the end user, the new technology will bring down the number of distortions in the video viewing process, while providers with the same amount of network resources will be able to provide services to a larger number of users.
