The error occurred: the service for storing the code GitLab accidentally deleted almost all data

Last night, January 31, the service for storing the GitLab code was not available. It turns out that the system administrator of the company accidentally ... deleted almost everything. Assuming a lot of errors at different stages of copying the database from one server to another, the system administrator from the Netherlands launched the deletion of data from the main server. When the process was stopped, out of almost 300 GB of data "survived" only 4.5 GB.

Erroneously, the database was erased, which contained requests for changes in the documentation and code of the user project; repositories of users (storage) were intact. Representatives of GitLab report on each stage of the database recovery. At the same time, GitLab notes that the company was not helped by any of its five systems for storing backups. In one of the cases, the procedure for storing data was triggered with an error, because of which the backup was not created. At the same time, the company did not have an error notification system when creating backups.

Now the company armed with one of the backups, which was created manually six hours before the incident. With its help, the company tries to recover data.

GitLab was created in 2014 and tries to compete with platforms such as GitHub and Atlassian. The advantage of GitLab is that it distributes its code storage tools for free and allows other organizations to create their own repositories based on GitLab systems with the addition of their own functions.

While it is not known how much user data will be restored intact, but the backup of a 6-hour given for a service of this kind is a long time ago.
