British students found out how much paper you need to print the entire Internet

A group of students from the British University of Leicester recently conducted a study and found answers to two rather interesting questions: how much paper will it take to print the entire Internet and how many trees will it take to create the paper quantity needed for this business?

First, the students calculated how many pages on the average contain an average website, located in the visible Internet, which is indexed by search engines and does not belong to the so-called "hidden Internet", where it is not possible to get to usual ways. It's about networks that can only be accessed through various anonymizers like the Tor browser, which some of our readers might know.

As an example of the "open network" web site, "Wikipedia" was taken where the average statistical information item can hold up to 15 A4 sheets. To print out all the pages of Wikipedia, it would take about 71 million paper sheets. Applying this rule to approximately 4.54 billion pages on the Web (that's how much is publicly available) and taking into account the fact that about 8500 sheets of paper can be obtained from one tree, the students found that it would take 8,011,765 trees and 68,100,002,500 sheets of paper in order to print all these pages from the Internet.

However, students note that the rule of 15 pages per article is very conditional, so for assurance they have doubled the results, having received a total of 136 billion sheets of paper.

At the end of their research, students note that its results can be considered fair only in relation to "clean", visible and censored Internet. In other words, the "hidden Internet", or anonymous Internet, was not taken into account with this study.

"Presumably, the share of" open Internet "accounts for only about 0.2 percent of the overall level of the global network."
