The HTTP protocol has received a global update for the first time in 16 years

Протокол HTTP получил глобальное обновление впервые за 16 лет

Many of us rarely think about what "http" means at the beginning of the web page address, which we drive into the address bar of our browser. This abbreviation has become so familiar to our eye that we simply do not notice it, considering it all for granted. In fact, this combination of symbols is one of the fundamental foundations of the Internet we all love, and without it there would be no social networks or our favorite blogs, there would be nothing at all. And for the first time in 16 years the HTTP protocol has received a global update.

HTTP stands for Hyper Text Transfer Protocol. In Russian, this means "hypertext transfer protocol". Under the hypertext, in this case, we mean a text pierced with links to other texts, which we call "references". In fact, of the millions of pages linked together by a huge number of links, where you can go from one place to another, the modern Internet is composed.

HTTP is an application layer protocol for transferring data in the form of hypertext documents in HTML format (the main language of markup of web pages) and other data. It works on the technology of "client-server" and implies the presence of a request (introduction of the link in the address bar) and the response (loading the corresponding page from the server). Like any other protocol, HTTP can be improved to significantly speed up page loading. This is what the employees of the company IETF HTTP Working Group have been doing for the last 16 years.

HTTP / 2 - this is the name of the first serious update of the protocol since 1999, when the HTTP version was released under the number 1.1. The update will speed up the download of Internet pages, improve the quality of Internet connections to remote servers, and optimize the cache on your computer, so that the browser does not have to download the same data several times, overloading the Internet channel.

Using HTTP / 2, one more important problem of the modern Internet should be solved. In the case of HTTP, if the server receives too many requests, it may simply fall, and then you will not be able to open your favorite page. After updating the server will be able to handle multiple requests simultaneously, which will avoid their overload. It will also significantly improve the protection of user data.

Google Corp. has already officially announced that it will try to migrate to the HTTP / 2 protocol as quickly as possible in order to speed up data download for users of the World Wide Web. Developers interested in the updated protocol can already now gain access to its specifications on the relevant site, and as for ordinary users like us with you, we can only wait for the updated protocol to take effect, and the Internet will start to work a little faster.
