It would seem that every modern person who spends a considerable part of his life working with a computer and the Internet should understand that the security of his data primarily depends on himself and on the electronic passwords he uses. To improve security, experts do not get tired to advise the use of more complex electronic passwords. However, as it turns out, people do not learn not only from the mistakes of others, but even from their own.
The annual analysis company SplashData analyzed millions of passwords stolen in 2014 and compiled a list of the 25 worst ones. They are so simple in the selection that they are not actually passwords, but already deliberately provide attackers with access to information that is not, apparently, for display to third parties. According to Mark Burnett, a specialist in computer security, passwords that are in the list of the 25 worst in 2014, account for 2.2 percent of their total number.
The list of worst electronic passwords is as follows:
- 123456
- password
- 12345
- 12345678
- qwerty
- 123456789
- 1234
- baseball
- dragon
- football
- 1234567
- monkey
- letmein
- abc123
- 111111
- mustang
- access
- shadow
- master
- michael
- superman
- 696969
- 123123
- batman
- trustno1
Experts of the company SplashData once again advise to increase the level of safety of your data to create passwords consisting of eight or more characters, containing at the same time not only letters, but also numbers, as well as other characters available on the keyboard. In addition, it is strongly not recommended to use the same password on different sites.
If you cannot remember multiple passwords, security experts advise using special password managers such as LastPass and SplashID. In this case, you do not have to memorize many different passwords, it will be enough to know just one, which will provide access to the entire collection of passwords used. And, of course, you must understand that this password itself must be more complicated than just “123456”.
