The American company Hold Security has discovered the largest theft of Internet user data lately. It is reported that the crime was committed by a group of Russian hackers.
An investigation by Hold Security revealed that hackers stole 1.2 billion logins and passwords, and also hacked more than 500 million email addresses. The attackers used the "botnet" - a network of zombie computers of unsuspecting users. The zombie network checks web sites for SQL vulnerabilities that allow the injection of malicious SQL code intended to steal personal data of Internet users.
In Hold Security stated that hackers managed to hack 420,000 sites. The company did not disclose the site names.
According to the newspaper The New York Times, the hacker group, which is located in southern Russia, includes more than a dozen people aged about 20 years. The guys started in 2011 with buying on the black market databases for sending spam. Ironically, the publication of information about this almost the largest theft in history occurred at the time of the computer security conference, which takes place from August 2 to 7 in Las Vegas.
The Times reports that Hold Security is currently developing an online tool that will allow users to determine for themselves whether their personal data has been stolen. The most problematic company calls users of online banking and shopping on the Internet who could use the same login passwords in different accounts.
