Remote streaming gameplay has been around for a long time already. But the main problem of this technology is a big delay between the actions of players and the display of their consequences in the game, because the speed and quality of the network connection is different for everyone.
Using the example of streaming services Onlive and Gaikai (now known as PlayStation Now), it can be said that video game streaming is very popular among players. But the so-called RTT (round-trip time), input lag or, in other words, the delay between the user pressing the button and the beginning of the action of his character on the screen, sometimes still felt quite strongly. The reason may be the excessive remoteness of the server or the shortcomings of the network connection.
It seems that Microsoft knows how to solve this problem. Researchers at the Redmond corporation developed the DeLorean system, named after the time machine from the Back to the Future trilogy, which is able to predict the players' further actions even before they press the corresponding keyboard or gamepad keys.
Published by Microsoft Research Proves that the DeLorean system has already been tested on two video games - Doom 3 and Fable 3. The system is able to look into the future and reduce the delay between the actions of players and the response of the game by 250 milliseconds. This, I tell you, is quite a serious achievement.
“The DeLorean system prepares several sets of“ rendered ”game frames in advance, based on predicting the player’s further actions. Due to this, the user simply does not feel any delays in management. DeLorean combines a system for predicting behavior, a system for fitting events to a timeline, as well as a special powerful signal compression system, ”the document says.
During the testing of the system on the focus group, most of the players could not notice the difference between the game on the local gaming system and the remote streaming. This proves once again that the technology has shown itself from the best side.
The disadvantages of technology include the fact that for the parallel rendering of several branches of developments within the game, considerable technical resources are needed, that is, the system will work only on a very powerful server. We are not talking about the introduction of technology in the short term, but after a few years, when it is optimized to an acceptable level, we can see a streaming service similar to PlayStation Now from Microsoft’s main competitor in the console market.
