Mozilla has released an updated version of its mozjpeg encoder for JPEG graphics, which significantly improved the raster graphics compression algorithm to increase the speed of graphic data transmission on the Web.
Despite some drawbacks in the form of image artifacts with strong graphics compression, JPEG is by far the most popular way of distributing graphics on the Web along with another popular PNG format. That is why many companies are constantly working to improve this format at least a little and improve some of its technical indicators.
Technological giants like Microsoft and Google have for many years tried to create their own alternative graphic formats, but none of them gained proper popularity among Internet users.
The new version of the mozjpeg encoder will reduce the size of JPEG files by an average of 5%. Depending on the image, reducing its weight can reach a record 15%. Here the role is played by the amount of detail, color, resolution and many other factors. It may seem that these values are very small, but in fact, reducing the weight of graphics even by 5-10% without significant loss of quality is indeed a very good result.
Mozilla has already received a grant in the amount of $ 60,000 from Facebook for the further development of the mozjpeg project, so it’s safe to say that this graphic format will continue to evolve in the future.
