Smarcos project: make smart gadgets smarter

The essence of the Smarcos project (Smart Composite Human-Computer Interfaces) is to develop a system that will allow an increasing number of Internet-connected devices on the market to monitor and predict user needs in real time. In other words, such devices will independently coordinate actions among themselves and adequately provide the information the person needs with minimal user participation.

The rapid evolution of the electronics industry has led to the fact that the microchips used in devices have become much cheaper in production and use than before, and therefore we can use them in more extensive areas and devices that surround us. By the end of the decade, Earth’s population will be close to 8 billion, and, according to Ericsson’s projections, many of these people on the planet will use about 50 billion devices with Internet access.

Such devices will be not only our smartphones and tablets, but also cars, washing machines and even coffee makers. As the technology becomes “smarter”, we need to be sure that these devices will perform exactly the actions that we want and expect from them, and without really understanding the intricacies of each of these things: we are consumers , and we want to get a unified management structure for these things, which would be harmoniously inscribed in them and would link them all into a single Internet network.

The Smarcos project is currently engaged in solving this particular problem. Its essence is to create a system that, without requiring changes in appearance and sensation from using the user interface of this or that thing, would be able to follow a person’s behavior, understand them and predict his habits based on this. The collected information will be processed within the network, and therefore each device of this network will be able to respond accordingly to certain tasks set by a person, providing only the most important and necessary information at the moment.

To demonstrate the basic features of the platform, Smarcos has opened the “healthy life” service that runs on all personal devices of the user (smartphone, TV, car, computer, etc.). The real-time service collects information about a person and, at the right time, independently provides data relating to his health, as well as stimulates him to physical activity, if he, for example, has stayed too long behind the TV. The system reminds the person that he needs to pay attention to certain physical activities, and also gives other tips that can improve the physical condition of the body.

The next step in the development of the service will be the creation of the ability to monitor the consumption of household electricity and its distribution through a minimalistic user interface. Representatives of the Smarcos project say that user interfaces will be available to consumers by the end of the year.
