The Vatican State announced its intention to transfer a huge library of old scrolls and various documents to digital media. Moreover, all these valuable historical materials will be available to visitors of the official website of the library for free.


The Japanese company NTT Data will help the implementation of such an ambitious project to the Vatican State, and the organizers will cost about $ 20 million for this whole undertaking. Over the next few years, about 82,000 ancient manuscripts will be carefully scanned and retouched.

The first part of the materials contains about 3000 manuscripts and includes classical Greek and Latin works, as well as outstanding works of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Japanese and Vatican specialists will scan more than 40,000 pages, while trying not to damage fragile historical documents.

“We will continue to try to carry out such projects aimed at preserving the historical treasures of humanity for our descendants, and also so that anyone can get acquainted with the works of writers, poets, philosophers and inventors from the distant past,” said Caesar Pasini, one from the Vatican library executives.

The Vatican Library was founded by Pope Nicholas V in the XV century. The process of preparing to digitize documents began in December last year, but with the arrival of Japanese specialists in the project, the speed of the implementation of the plans of the Vatican has increased significantly.
