Edward Snowden nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize

Эдвард Сноуден

Two Norwegian politicians nominated Edward Snowden for the Nobel Peace Prize, which is awarded exclusively to individuals and organizations who have made, in the opinion of the Committee, an outstanding contribution to the field of peace.

The Nobel Peace Prize was first presented in 1901 and since then the award of especially distinguished peacekeepers takes place on a regular annual basis. According to the charter of the Nobel Foundation, members of the Nobel Committee, members of national parliaments and governments, members of the international arbitration court in The Hague, Nobel Peace Prize Laureates and some other persons are eligible to nominate candidates for the award.

"The revelations of Edward Snowden strongly contributed to the establishment of order and stability throughout the world," representatives of the Norwegian Socialist Party Baard Vegar Solhiel and Snorre Valen said in their address to the members of the Nobel Committee.

As a rule, all nominees are kept in the strictest secret until the beginning of the voting. But in some cases, people who nominate a particular candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize, have the right to reveal the identity of the nominee.

Snowden probably has quite strong rivals with whom he will have to fight for the main prize, so the fact that he was nominated for a prize does not mean that he will get it in the end.

It is quite ironic that in 2009 the current US President Barack Obama received the Nobel Peace Prize. And now the nominee is the person who revealed to the world the other side of American democracy and dazzling smiles.
