New Year for Skype began with a very unpleasant situation associated with a gap in security. The official messenger on Twitter was hacked by a group of hackers calling themselves the Syrian Electronic Army. As a result of the hacking, hackers posted several messages on Twitter that called for three million Skype subscribers to stop using Microsoft email services.

Interestingly, the message published as a result of the hacking retweeted more than 8,000 people, until 2 hours after the incident, the official representatives of Skype did not regain access and removed it. Another message appeared a few hours earlier (later also deleted). In the report, clearly bearing direct relation to the NSA's US security service, hackers demanded "to stop spying on people." In addition to hacking the Skype page in the microblogging service Twitter, hackers managed to hack the official service page on Facebook, as well as get access to a blog account on the official Skype website. As in the first case, access officials were able to restore only after some time and it turned out that the hack was more phishing rather than an attempt to undermine the general security system of Skype. The hacks occurred at the very moment when the majority of Skype employees celebrated New Year's Eve and were on vacation.
Portal The Verge decided to contact the official representatives of the company Microsoft, as well as Skype, so that they commented on the unpleasant situation.
