Microsoft brings web pages to walls and furniture

Microsoft SurroundWeb

Microsoft Research adopted the idea of IllumiRoom and applied it to the Internet. Microsoft’s research division showed SurroundWeb, which finds flat surfaces in a room and projects web pages on them.

The SurroundWeb tool is a “3D browser” that allows you to display Internet content on any flat surface in a room. To scan surfaces, such as a cabinet or walls, the system uses a Kinect sensor from an Xbox game console. Moreover, the web page may not be fully projected, but its individual elements, depending on the interests of the user, Gizmodo writes.

As noted above, SurroundWeb is a continuation of the IllumiRoom system, which extends the gaming scene beyond the TV screen. The project was announced last spring. The main difference from the IllumiRoom SurroundWeb is to work with web pages that are more dynamic and volatile compared to games with a given source code.

SurroundWeb is currently in the prototype stage. When this technology will be commercialized, is not reported.

Augmented reality is knocking on all doors. It comes to the fact that scientists propose to use it in the treatment of phantom pain.
