Scientists have confirmed the generally accepted fact about the mental imbalance of people who like to run on websites, including on hi-news.ru. A recent study by three independent universities in Canada found that users who provoke other participants in a virtual discussion to hostile actions or conflict are sadists and psychopaths.
The work of psychologists from the universities of Manitoba, Winnipeg and British Columbia was published in the February issue of the journal Personality and Individual Differences. The study involved several hundred people.
As it turned out, people with pronounced signs of psychopathy, sadism and machiavellianism have the greatest propensity for Internet trolling. The latter term means manipulating other people in order to achieve personal goals without any remorse of conscience. So it is, online trolls enjoy the reaction of others to their destructive behavior and enjoy the suffering of others. Therefore, often on many sites and forums you can see calls not to feed the trolls, that is, not to comment on their actions, but simply to ignore.
Psychologists say that the Internet troll is none other than a “prototypical household sadist,” who is inclined to rejoice at the torment of others. Researchers disagree that anonymous commenting creates favorable conditions for online trolling. They rather associate this phenomenon with the innate characteristics of man.
