The new chip from IBM will increase the speed of the Internet to 400 gigabits per second

Новый чип от IBM

Modern Internet channels provide the user with a fairly good connection speed to the web. However, with daily increasing volumes of traffic, current speeds will not be enough in the near future. To solve this problem, IBM developers presented a prototype analog-to-digital converter that increases the speed of access to the Internet up to 400 gigabits per second.

Such chips are used in most communication systems, converting the level of the analog signal received by the receiver into its digital value. The new chip from IBM Research in Switzerland will allow data transfer at a speed of 400 gigabits per second. This is many times faster than the standard network connections. At this speed, movies with a resolution of 4K will be transmitted in seconds, reports gizmodo.com portal.

In addition to high bandwidth, the new chips can boast of low power consumption, which is approximately 2.1 watts. Also an important feature of the chip from IBM is its small size, compared with various new equipment for high-speed Internet.

It is also worth noting that the initial development of the IBM converter was aimed at creating a chip for the Square Kilometer Array radio telescope, which is being built in Australia and South Africa. Construction of the telescope is planned to be completed by 2024, and its capabilities should provide researchers with data for new scientific discoveries.

Despite the fact that the high-speed chip was planned for scientific purposes, it can find its application in our daily use.
