Six Chinese Internet companies presented an online platform to refute rumors and false information spread on the Internet. According to the news agency China Daily, the new website is collecting and comparing information from microblogging services, news portals and the Baidu search engine in order to expose online scams.

Qianlong, Sogou, Sohu, Netease, Baidu and Sina Weibo are taking part in the project. The platform was created on behalf of non-profit social organizations Beijing Internet Information Office (BIIO) and Beijing Internet Association.

The use of the Internet has contributed to the development of not only freedom of speech, but also the spread of rumors and misinformation, says BIIO Information Manager Chen Hua.

The platform is an attempt by Beijing websites to eradicate online rumors and teach Internet users to distinguish truth from lies.

The first stage of development of the new platform has been completed. Around 100,000 messages have been collected that contain false information and are related to online fraud. The system found about 30 such sites.

Work on the second phase of the project will take a year. Companies are planning with the help of additional tools to involve themselves in the fight against false information of Internet users.

This is not China’s first attempt to establish control over regional Internet resources. In June, GreatFire.org, which monitors websites blocked by Chinese authorities, recorded government experiments with new methods of censorship restrictions, in particular those related to search results.

Recall that the other day the media released information about the secret program of total Internet surveillance by US intelligence agencies.
