What can your character tell about your character?

Your handwriting, handshake, mailbox - almost everything you do and what you touch can tell you about you. The published results of a new psychological study only confirm this rule: according to your self, you can easily learn a lot about your personality.

During the study, led by Lin Ki from Nanyang University of Technology in Singapore, 123 Sulfi from Sina Weibo, the popular Chinese microblogging service, Twitter, was analyzed. Every person whose selfi has been studied has filled out a questionnaire with questions about character traits.

In the second part of the Selfi experiment, 107 Chinese students were shown who were supposed to talk about the identity of their owners. As a result, the researchers found a curious relationship between species of Selfie and character traits.

So, more friendly people more often shot themselves from the bottom up. On the background of selfies, made by more conscious people, personal belongings and other details fell less often. People open to new experiences, often showed positive emotions in their photos. People with neuroticism tend to be photographed with a "duck" expression.

But here's the catch: when students were shown selfies, in most cases they could not correctly determine the character traits of the people depicted on them. For example, they incorrectly considered that the compressed lips mean openness of character, and people who are alone in photos are nervous. The only thing that the students guessed was that the positive emotions in the photo indicate a person's openness to new experience and impressions.

The researchers suggested that the reason for the incorrect assumptions expressed by the students was that most people at the Selfie try to look fun, which complicates the task of determining their nature.

The study also has some limitations. So, its results may not extend to other nationalities and cultures. In addition, Selfie authors themselves assessed their personality, which could also affect the accuracy of estimates.

Nevertheless, this study opens the way for further research on how we present ourselves on the Internet. For example, the authors of the study suggest creating automatic algorithms that will define "duck" facial expressions on selfies and help prevent the development of neuroticism.

In addition, this study shows that when you put your self on the Internet, you talk about yourself much more than you think. In other words, trying to leave the necessary impression in social networks, you can not hide your real character traits.
