Google is testing drones for Internet delivery

Titan Aerospace

It seems that Google has decided to come to grips with drones. The company asked the Federal Communications Commission (USA) for permission to test UAVs for delivering the Internet to remote corners of the planet. It all started with a recent purchase of startup Titan Aerospace.

Recently, Google bought Titan Aerospace, a specialist in electric unmanned aerial systems powered by solar energy and designed for long flights at high altitude. These systems can ultimately be used to provide Internet connectivity in remote areas or as a means of environmental monitoring in areas of oil spills or deforestation. To demonstrate and test the system in a highly regulated environment, special permission is required, says Google in a message to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The company also asked the regulator not to disclose all the details of the tests.

Google bought Titan Aerospace with the goal of introducing the company's technologies into Project Loon, which is Google’s own initiative to deliver Internet by balloon to the corners of the planet with limited connectivity. Google also plans to provide those in need with Internet access using low-orbit satellites. The feature of Titan Aerospace drones on solar panels is that they can stay in the air for up to five years.

According to the resource Ars Technica, Google plans to get permission to conduct tests of its UAVs for a period of up to 180 days, starting from October 6, 2014. As a test site was chosen ground in the state of New Mexico.

Recently, Google has been paying more attention to drones. According to some reports, the company is also developing a small cargo delivery system using drones.
