As a result of human error, hundreds of millions of Chinese Internet users could not access local websites, including popular Baidu and Sina resources, for 8 hours, starting at about 3:15 on Tuesday, January 21.
The reason for this was the failure of the Great Chinese Firewall, a system for filtering Internet content established by the Chinese government in 2003. With the help of this system, the Chinese government blocks access of citizens to undesirable foreign Internet resources and publications.
When Chinese users tried to open a local resource, they were taken to the page of Dynamic Internet Technology (DIT), which offers the Freegate service (a service for circumventing the “Great China Firewall”). But DIT challenged its involvement in the crash.
Some experts have called the failure the largest in history. The New York Times newspaper published the words of Heiko Specht from Compuware of Detroit: "I have never seen a failure of this magnitude before."
The data provided by Qihoo 360 Technology, an information security company, claims that the failure affected three quarters of Chinese DNS servers (DNS servers associate numeric IP addresses with letter symbols of domains), reports peopledaily.com.cn.
The Chinese government refutes assumptions about a cyber attack by opponents of the state regime and states that the problem was caused by a technical error made during the editing of the firewall settings.
