The US National Security Agency is once again accused of illegally spying on citizens. This time we are not talking about wiretapping telephone conversations of presidents of different countries, but about intercepting users' personal information directly in computer networks.
Edward Snowden has published new secret documents that shed light on another project of the NSA, called "Computer Network Exploitation" or just CNE. The goal of the project is to gain access to computer networks around the world and install special spyware applications that carefully filter and track information of interest to the NSA.
Attacks on computer networks were committed by specially employed hackers, the number of which, judging by the documents, was more than 1000 people. As of 2008, the NSA was crushing about 20,000 computer networks around the world. By mid-2012, the number of networks controlled by the NSA almost doubled - to 50,000.
In addition to tracking important information flows in infected networks, the NSA also installed special “sleeping Trojans” on computers that have access to these networks, which can be activated at any time by a remote command. Using these Trojans, NSA employees can do almost anything with an infected computer, and users will not even guess about it.
On the CNE project, the NSA has worked since 1998. It was quite expected that the NSA leadership refused to comment on the information that appeared in the world's major mass media, arguing that the disclosure of such data could adversely affect the US national security.
