In September 2010, the world-famous hacker group Anonymous conducted an open action Operation Payback campaign, the essence of which was DDoS attacks on the websites of international payment systems MasterCard and Visa, Bank of America and other commercial organizations. The operation was carried out in support of the project of WikiLeaks Julian Assandzha after the refusal of companies to accept remittances in his favor.
The attackers failed to escape - at the beginning of this month, 13 of the alleged members of Anonymous were charged with participation in “Operation Payback”. Among them were 28-year-old IT professional Philip Simpson, 65-year-old Jeffrey Commander, and 27-year-old Ryan Gabeli - a current engineer of the company Twitter.
Gabel is accused of helping Anonymous in conducting hacker attacks and gaining unauthorized access to computer systems of commercial organizations, The Verge writes. In September 2010, Ryan began working at Amazon, and in December an Anonymous attack was launched on this company's website. A month after that
Gabel resigned. It is likely that he was involved in attacks on the site of his former employer.
In June 2013, Gabel was hired by Twitter for the position of engineer responsible for the stable operation of the microblogging service. The FBI issued the first arrest warrants for Operation Payback participants back in early 2011, but Ryan was not among the suspects.
Gabel declined to comment on this issue, followed by representatives of Twitter and Amazon. In the event that Ryan is found guilty on all counts, he will most likely have to say goodbye to his current employer.
"The operation of payment" flew in payment systems "a lot of money" - the restoration of the sites MasterCard, Visa and PayPal cost their managers nearly six million dollars.
Earlier this year, several more members of Anonymous, suspected of hacker attacks in September 2010, appeared before the London court. Most of them escaped probation, and the most severe punishment went to the young student Chris Weatherhead - he was given a half year prison.
